Attraction

I first discovered the Law of Attraction via a circuatous route some ten years ago. My journey started with a book ‘Change your life with NLP’ by Lindsey Agnes, which I started to read while sitting in the waiting room of a dentist client. This, in turn lead to reading ‘The Field’, ‘The Intention Experiment’ and the ‘Power of Eight’ by Lynn McTaggart. And, inevitably ‘The Secret’ by Rhonda Byrne. I was captivated as every word seemed to speak to me, I really felt that the text was mirroring all that I had thought throughout my life – I had found my home. However, at first I was only interested in material manifestations, and when I put some of the principles explained in The Secret into practice things really seemed to work. But I soon realised that possessions were not that important to me, and certainly not the road to my happiness. So I began to concentrate on myself, my happiness and my life, and very soon I actually became happier, I began to worry less, and I also started to find true inner peace. I now live my life according (mostly) to the principles of the Law of Attraction, on a plane far above the chaos and termoil, the anger and frustration of todays world, in a beautifully peaceful, harmonious, happy and calm world of my own creation. My life is now mostly marvelous and I certainly have no interest in returning to my old life and my old world.

Harnessing the Mystique: Understanding the Law of Attraction

The Emerald Tablet

In today’s bustling era of self-improvement literature and transformational seminars, a theme that recurrently emerges and resonates with many is the Law of Attraction (LOA). Its recent prominence may give the impression of a newfound concept, but its roots can be traced back to ancient civilizations and spiritual teachings. Boiled down to its essence, the LOA proclaims, “like attracts like,” implying that the energies we emit through our thoughts, intentions, and emotions attract analogous energies from the vast universe around us.

The Historical Landscape of the Law of Attraction

At its core, the LOA is anchored in the belief that our predominant thoughts and feelings act as a cosmic magnet, drawing parallel experiences and energies into our lives. This ancient wisdom has been reiterated across ages and cultures, often encapsulated in timeless maxims such as “As you think, so shall you become.”

Ancient scriptures across various cultures have echoed this sentiment. For instance, the Bible wisely counsels, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7), suggesting an intimate connection between our dominant thoughts and the life we manifest.

Beyond Optimism: The Real Essence of the LOA

The Law of Attraction #1
“You don’t attract what you want. You attract what you are” – Dr Wayne Dyer

While, at a cursory glance, the LOA might seem to merely champion the age-old mantra of “stay positive,” its depths are far more profound. It revolves around an alignment of the soul, mind, and heart. A mere vocal affirmation of desires, devoid of genuine belief or emotion, is like a ship without a compass — directionless.

Dr. Wayne Dyer, a modern advocate of the LOA, beautifully encapsulated this when he said, “You don’t attract what you want. You attract what you are.” The universe, in all its wisdom, responds not just to our superficial wants, but to the depth of our belief, desire, and intent.

Intersections with Science

Quantum Physics #1

Traditionally rooted in spiritual or metaphysical contexts, discussions around the LOA have recently seen intersections with scientific theories:

  1. Quantum Physics: At a quantum level, everything is energy. Each thought or emotion could, in theory, emit a unique vibrational frequency. These frequencies might interact with similar energies in the cosmos, shaping our lived experiences.
  2. Neuroplasticity: Modern neuroscience has shown that the brain isn’t a static organ. Persistent thoughts and emotions can potentially influence the brain’s very architecture, forging neural pathways that might make certain outcomes more probable.

Operationalizing the Law of Attraction

For those intrigued and wishing to experiment with the LOA, here are some actionable steps:

  1. Clarity in Desire: Be as precise as possible. For instance, instead of a nebulous “I desire happiness,” a clearer intention might be, “I desire joy in my daily interactions.”
  2. Visualization: Famous instances like Jim Carrey’s visualization of a $10 million check, which later materialized with his role in “Dumb and Dumber,” showcase the power of this technique.
  3. Emotional Resonance: The emotions accompanying your desires should be in resonance. Feel the joy, pride, or satisfaction of your goal as if it has already been achieved.
  4. Affirmative Repetition: Positive affirmations can act as mantras. Louise Hay, a figurehead in the self-help realm, emphasized that affirmations act as solutions, helping replace our ingrained limiting beliefs.
  5. Active Pursuit: As the legendary Tony Robbins often states, intentions without dedicated action can be fruitless. “The path to success is to take massive, determined actions.”
  6. Gratitude Practices: Oprah Winfrey’s advocacy for a daily gratitude journal underscores the transformative potential of acknowledging daily blessings.
  7. Surrender and Trust: Once intentions are set, trust the cosmic play. As Paulo Coelho insightfully wrote in “The Alchemist,” “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

A Balanced Perspective on the LOA

Cosmic Alignment

It’s paramount to recognize that the LOA is not a panacea or a substitute for dedicated effort. It isn’t a tool to sidestep adversity or to suppress genuine emotions. It’s about cosmic alignment, acknowledging that trials often precede triumphs and that challenges can be vehicles for growth.

In Conclusion

The Law of Attraction offers an empowering lens to view the world, emphasizing the role of our beliefs, emotions, and thoughts in shaping our destinies. While detractors might remain skeptical, for countless individuals worldwide, the LOA has served as a beacon, guiding them toward a life of purpose and fulfillment. In the end, as Stephen Covey, the author of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” encapsulated it, our thoughts have a cascading impact on our lives, eventually shaping our destinies.

I was 52 years old before I learned my most important life lessons: Life can be so much easier than we choose to make it. My life is in my hands – it is what I make of it. Life can be as happy, loving, joyous, fulfilling and downright amazing as I choose it to be. The Universe loves me and wants me to be happy, prosperous, fulfilled. Things will always turn out for the best in the end. Have faith, let things go, ask and trust in the Universe. I have a choice! I have always had a choice! And I have more power and opportunity than I ever realised!
