Lynn McTaggart: A Forefront Figure in Field Theory and New Thought Philosophy

I first discovered Lynn McTaggart at the beginning of my journey into New Thought and Alternative thinking. I began by reading ‘The Field’ and was surprised and delighted by Lynn’s openness and willingness to take on “radical” ideas and theories. The book was written from a scientific standpoint. While I initially struggled with some of the complicated physics she describes, with patience and determination I soon got to grips with it. Lynn’s work remains part of my treasured library and reading her books definitely provided me with an excellent jumping-off point for my travels into the world of New Thought.

Lynn McTaggart, an acclaimed investigative journalist and innovative author, stands prominently in the realms of consciousness exploration, delving into the profound nature of human intention and the intricate web of universal interconnectedness. Widely celebrated for her seminal works on field theory, most notably “The Field” and “The Intention Experiment,” McTaggart has become a beacon in the New Thought movement, fundamentally reshaping perspectives on the interplay between consciousness, science, and spirituality.

Detailed Personal Profile: Born in the vibrant heartland of the United States, Lynn McTaggart subsequently relocated to the culturally rich landscapes of the UK. Embarking on a career in journalism, she collaborated with several prestigious publications, offering deep insights into contemporary health and medicine. Yet, her innate curiosity and relentless pursuit of understanding the deeper truths of existence prompted her to traverse beyond conventional realms, navigating the intricate junctions between modern science, profound spirituality, and holistic personal growth.

The Field

“The Field” – A Revelatory Exploration: In 2001, the literary world witnessed the release of McTaggart’s transformative book, “The Field.” Here, she delved into a captivating hypothesis: the existence of a clandestine force field—a vast expanse of energy—that serves as the universal connective tissue. Through rigorous research, she surmised that every entity, sentient or inanimate, is seamlessly bound within this cosmic ‘field,’ potentially unlocking the answers to numerous phenomena eluding traditional scientific frameworks.

To anchor her hypotheses in concrete foundations, McTaggart extensively engaged with the works of avant-garde scientists spanning disciplines such as quantum physics, advanced biology, and innovative psychology. Her narrative compellingly showcased the underpinnings of the zero-point field—a pulsating, vibrational arena undergirding our perceivable universe. McTaggart’s central argument revolved around the infinite possibilities this field holds for human consciousness, its potential therapeutic benefits, and the expansive cosmic understanding it promises.

The Intention Experiment

The Intention Experiment - Lynn McTaggart

“The Intention Experiment” – Pushing Boundaries: Elevating the groundbreaking concepts introduced in “The Field,” 2007 saw the advent of “The Intention Experiment.” This audacious endeavor aimed to decipher the tangible effects of concentrated thought and its potential sway over material reality. Far from being a mere speculative treatise, the book documented a plethora of meticulously designed, global experiments, investigating the potency of human intention on diverse subjects—from the growth dynamics of plants to the molecular intricacies of water.

Remarkably, these experiments, many orchestrated with the collaborative spirit of thousands of her enthusiastic readers, consistently revealed tangible outcomes traceable to deliberate intention. Such outcomes galvanized the assertion that a properly channeled human consciousness possesses the latent capability to manifest discernible changes in the tangible world.

Impact on the New Thought Movement: Originating in the philosophical ferment of the 19th century, the New Thought movement has consistently championed the ideals of constructive thinking, spiritual enlightenment, and the metaphysical essence of existence. McTaggart’s scholarly contributions breathed fresh life into this doctrine.

  • Melding Science with Spirituality: McTaggart’s synthesis of rigorous scientific exploration with spiritual paradigms has fortified bridges between these two traditionally dichotomous realms. Her exhaustive research and empirical approach bolstered the proposition that spiritual events might be grounded in tangible scientific principles, countering long-held skeptic views.
  • Celebrating Individual Potency: Echoing the New Thought doctrine of affirmative thought, McTaggart’s emphasis on intentional power amplifies the tenet that individuals harbor intrinsic abilities to sculpt their destinies and imprint their influence on the broader universe. This synergy between her work and New Thought principles reinforces the philosophy’s core tenet of self-empowerment.
  • Advocating Universal Connectivity: Central to McTaggart’s oeuvre is the ethos of cosmic interrelation. This perspective, advocating the intrinsic linkage of all entities and the paradigm of collective consciousness, resonates deeply with New Thought’s convictions about universal unity and the ripple effect of individual actions.

Lynn McTaggart Quotes:

“At our most elemental, we are not a chemical reaction, but an energetic charge. Human beings and all living things are a coalescence of energy in a field of energy connected to every other thing in the world. This pulsating energy field is the central engine of our being and our consciousness, the alpha and the omega of our existence.”

The power of an intention multiplies, depending upon how many people are thinking the same thought at the same time.

“What matters is not the isolated entity, but the space between things, the relationship of things – the Bond…Every conflict that occurs – whether between husband and wife, social or racial groups – is resolved only when we can fully see and embrace the space – the Bond – between us.”

“Health is a state of perfect subatomic communication and ill health is a state when communication breaks down. We become ill when our waves are out of sync.”

“Through scientific experiment, they’d demonstrated that there may be such a thing as a life force flowing through the universe – what has variously been called collective consciousness or, as theologians have termed it, the Holy Spirit.”

— Lynne McTaggart

In summation, Lynn McTaggart’s odyssey into field theory and the nuances of intention has profoundly enriched the New Thought movement and the broader tapestry of spiritual and scientific dialogues. With her unwavering dedication to empirical inquiry and her audacity to challenge entrenched paradigms, McTaggart has etched her legacy among visionary thinkers. Her monumental works, such as “The Field” and “The Intention Experiment,” stand as beacons for those questing after a deeper grasp of our universe’s interwoven fabric and the dormant forces nestled within every individual.
